​Through tender storytelling, Who I Always Was tells the story of Pauline Menzcer, a surfer who became the best in the world, competing for over twenty years without a major sponsor. A queer surfer who, despite the blue ache of body pain and the cold edge of the surfing world, returned always to the water, that warm sea refuge. Guided by open ocean and an almost spiritual optimism, it is an intimate portrait of a surfer finding community through queer connection.
